The European Patent Office (EPO) and the European
\nInnovation Council (EIC) haven taken a further step to deepen their cooperation
\nby jointly supporting the development of breakthrough technologies and the
\ninnovation ecosystem in Europe. EPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos and Jean-David
\nMalo, Director of the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency
\n(EISMEA), in charge of implementing the European Innovation Council and other
\nSME-related programmes, have signed a letter of intent to strengthen
\noperational ties between both organisations.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe letter of intent commits the parties to provide
\nassistance and support to innovators
\nand entrepreneurs across Europe in turning their ideas into products and
\nservices, leveraging the EPO’s expertise. The EPO and EIC will also seek to
\nincrease patent valorisation and commercialisation by innovative SMEs,
\ndisruptive start-up and spin-off companies, and research organisations and
\nuniversities through awareness-raising, outreach, training initiatives and
\nsupport services.\n<\/p>\n

\nCampinos underlined that „this collaboration reflects the EPO’s ongoing
\ncommitment to support the global and European patent network and embolden
\nEurope’s innovation ecosystem“. Director Malo said: „Deep tech and
\nknowledge-intensive companies rely on intangible assets, such as patents, for
\ngrowth. By ensuring that our stakeholders – both researchers and innovative
\nSMEs – pay due attention to the role and importance of such intangible assets,
\nwe can help them to realise the full potential of their ideas.“ <\/p>\n
The European Innovation Council is Europe’s flagship
\ninnovation programme to identify, develop and scale up breakthrough
\ntechnologies and game changing innovations The EIC has been established under
\nthe EU Horizon Europe programme. It has a budget of \u20ac10.1 billion to support
\ngame changing innovations throughout the lifecycle from early stage research,
\nto proof of concept, technology transfer, and the financing and scale up of
\nstart-ups and SMEs. As cooperation between the EPO and EISMEA deepens, the EPO
\nwill deploy the expertise of its domain experts across several departments,
\nincluding patent examination, the EPO Patent Academy and Patent Knowledge to
\nsupport the work of the EIC, including its Programme Managers. The
\ncollaboration will focus on three key areas of activity:\n<\/p>\n
\nThe EPO Observatory on Patents and Technology will also be a
\nkey partner for EISMEA in deepening the understanding of start-up patent
