\nThe critical role of intellectual
\nproperty in driving sustainable development was the focus of a major event held
\nin Lisbon, Portugal, in which the EPO played an active part.<\/p>\n
The event comes in the wake of a UN interim report published in April which warned that
\nglobal progress towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) is
\nin „deep trouble“.\n<\/p>\n
\nHosted by INPI Portugal, the two-day event – „Thinking
\nabout Industrial Property, Sustainability and the Future of the Planet“<\/i> –
\nbrought together leaders from IP, Government, private sector and academia to
\nshare best practices, debate and contribute IP-driven solutions to address the
\nurgency of the UN SDGs.\n<\/p>\n
\nIn his opening address, President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos\u00a0called
\nsustainability an „existential challenge for humanity“ and asserted that
\ninnovation and technological solutions are key to achieving a more sustainable
\nfuture.\n<\/p>\n
\nMr Campinos also went on to highlight the measures the EPO
\nhas undertaken to support innovation by, for example, reorganising its examiner
\nworkforce around technology communities, democratising its patent data, and
\nenhancing accessibility into the patent system through the launch of the
\nUnitary Patent.\n<\/p>\n
\nDelivering opening addresses alongside Mr Campinos were Andr\u00e9 Moz Caldas, Secretary of State
\nfor the Presidency of the Council of Ministers; Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy
\nSecretary-General of the United Nations; Daren Tang, Director General of the
\nWorld Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO); Andrea Di Carlo, Deputy
\nExecutive Director of European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO);
\nand Catarina
\nSarmento e Castro, Minister of Justice of Portugal.\n<\/p>\n

\ncovered a wide range of sustainability topics, such as hydrogen innovation,
\nforest fire prevention, and the intersection of innovation and intellectual
\nproperty. Additionally, they highlighted the EPO Observatory on Patents and
\nTechnology, emphasising its potential for fostering collaboration and
\nunderstanding concerning the latest technology trends.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\nthe Portuguese Republic.
