\n1 June marks an historic day for patent
\nprotection in Europe
\nwith the entry into operation
\nof the much anticipated Unitary Patent system. The launch represents
\nthe most significant development in the European patent landscape since the signing of the European Patent Convention 50 years ago.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe Unitary
\nPatent system brings
\na host of substantial improvements for users everywhere, including cost reductions, streamlined procedures, increased
\ntransparency, and enhanced legal certainty.\n<\/p>\n
\nStarting 1 June, users can apply for a single patent through a single procedure, subject to a single
\nrenewal fee in a single
\ncurrency, and litigate under a
\nsingle legal system before the Unified
\nPatent Court (UPC). The UPC, which also commences its operations today, makes a centralised enforcement system
\nfor patents a reality, and allows users to file cases at the European level.\n<\/p>\n
\nSo far, seventeen states
\n– Austria, Belgium,
\nBulgaria, Denmark, Estonia,
\nFinland, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania,
\nLuxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands,
\nPortugal, Slovenia and Sweden –
\nhave joined, with eight additional EU member states expected to
\nparticipate in the future. These economies generate
\nan estimated combined GDP of more than
\nEUR 12 trillion – or almost 80% of the entire EU’s GDP – and incorporate a population of nearly
\n300 million people. The new patent
\nregime further solidifies European’s standing as a critical global market for
\ninnovation and investment.\n<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking on this
\nmomentous occasion, EPO President
\nAnt\u00f3nio Campinos said, „This day heralds a new dawn for
\npatents and innovation in Europe.
\nIt is a time when users can look
\nforward to a more accessible form of
\npatent protection that will deliver growth for
\nour businesses and economies, and help our inventors to deliver sustainable solutions to tackle the great
\nchallenges of our day. But this
\nachievement wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering dedication and tireless efforts of exceptional experts, political
\nrepresentatives, patent system users everywhere, and, of course, the remarkable work of the EPO staff, among many others.
\nThe European Patent Office has been entrusted
\nwith administering the Unitary
\nPatent by the member states,
\nand together with our stakeholders, we’re going to make it another success for
\nEurope.“\n<\/p>\n

\nA new era for innovation in Europe<\/i>„, on

\nonline. The celebration brings together key stakeholders and features distinguished speakers, including the EPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos, Gunnar Str\u00f6mmer, Swedish

\nrepresenting the EU Council Presidency, \u00c9ric Dupond-Moretti, French Minister of Justice, Franz Fayot, Luxembourg Minister of Economy, Thierry Breton,
\nEU Commissioner for the Internal Market and President of the
\nCourt of Appeal of the UPC, Dr Klaus Grabinski.\n<\/p>\n
