\nThe EPO held the PATLIB2023 conference in Tallinn on
\n11 and 12 May. Organised in co-operation with the Estonian Patent Office, the
\nhybrid event was attended onsite and online by more than 1\u00a0600 participants
\nfrom 75 countries. In addition, the proceedings of the opening day were
\nstreamed on EPO social media channels, attracting a further 2\u00a0000 viewers.\n<\/p>\n
\nIn his welcome address, EPO President Ant\u00f3nio
\nCampinos emphasized the importance of the event in the light of the success of
\nthe PATLIB 2.0 project, which is soon to conclude. He highlighted the key
\nachievements of the project, starting with the initial steps
\ntowards the digital transformation of the
\nnetwork, which will have a significant
\nimpact on its reach and effectiveness.\n<\/p>\n
\nHe went on to talk about the upskilling of the
\nnetwork in the area of technology transfer, including thanks to a technology
\ntransfer accreditation training programme, supported by the European Patent Academy.
\nPresident Campinos also acknowledged the robust collaborations maintained with
\nvarious innovation and technology transfer networks in Europe and beyond.\n<\/p>\n
\nLast but not least, he greeted the progress made
\nwith the Knowledge Transfer to Africa initiative\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0to foster innovation and technology transfer at
\n18 African universities, soon to be extended to 60 universities across the
\nAfrican continent. „Considering these achievements, we
\ncan be proud when we say that together we have digitised, professionalised,
\nharmonised and even internationalised our network“, the President concluded.\n<\/p>\n
\nPresident Campinos also announced the continued
\nsupport of the EPO in taking the network into the next phase of the EPO’s
\nStrategic Plan to 2028 and invited all conference participants to participate
\nin the public consultation by 15 May.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe conference kick-started with a keynote presentation on
\nthe impact that artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse will have on
\ninnovation and intellectual property (IP). This was followed by a lively panel
\ndiscussion on AI and IP. Further presentations and discussions reflected the outstanding
\nachievements of the PATLIB network. There were in-depth updates on work with
\nnetwork partners as well as the benefits of collaboration with African
\nuniversities and promoting innovation and technology transfer.\n<\/p>\n
\nFinally, Margus Viher, Director General of the
\nEstonian Patent Office, wrapped up the event by underlining how everyone present
\nin person in Tallinn and all those attending online from all over world had
\nincreased not only their level of knowledge, but also their level of happiness,
