April 2023<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"EPO and OAPI heads of office\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/news-events\/news\/2023\/20230427a\/epo-and-oapi-heads-of-office.jpg?lenya.module=svg&amp;height=375&amp;width=560\" title=\"EPO and OAPI heads of office\" width=\"560\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/><i>From left to right: Telmo Vilela, Principal Advisor to the President, Ant\u00f3nio Campinos, President, Christoph Ernst, Vice-President, Gilles Requena, Chief Patent Research and Policy Officer<\/i>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOn 26 April, EPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos and Denis Bohoussou, Director General of the<br \/>\nOrganisation Africaine de la Propri\u00e9t\u00e9 Intellectuelle (OAPI),<br \/>\nmet online to discuss strategic developments at both offices since they met in<br \/>\nCameroon during the EPO President&#8217;s mission to Africa in December<br \/>\n2022.\u00a0 The heads discussed their plan and<br \/>\nclarified the next steps for a validation agreement between the EPO and OAPI.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDuring the meeting, the EPO underlined its willingness to<br \/>\nprovide comprehensive legal, administrative and technical assistance to OAPI<br \/>\nand its member states in order to facilitate the entry into force of the<br \/>\nvalidation agreement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOAPI announced its intention to plan the entry in force<br \/>\nof the OAPI&#8217;s patent reform (from registration to substantive examination<br \/>\nsystem) at the same time as the Validation System in 2025. The EPO<br \/>\nunderlined its support for these plans and will continue to contribute by<br \/>\noffering legal support and training to OAPI examiners and helping draft the<br \/>\nPatent Examination Guidelines.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe delegations discussed several joint activities, such<br \/>\nas cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries in the OAPI region, and the<br \/>\nKnowledge Transfer to Africa initiative (KT2A). The EPO<br \/>\nlaunched KT2A in April 2022 to disseminate the PATLIB network&#8217;s experience<br \/>\nand expertise beyond Europe&#8217;s borders. The initiative aims to foster innovation<br \/>\nand technology transfer in selected African universities, in close cooperation<br \/>\nwith regional and national IP offices. OAPI announced that two universities<br \/>\nfrom its member states are joining the KT2A programme.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"EPO and OAPI delegates image\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/news-events\/news\/2023\/20230427a\/epo-and-oapi-delegates-image.jpg?lenya.module=svg&amp;height=375&amp;width=560\" title=\"EPO and OAPI delegates image\" width=\"560\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe<br \/>\nvalidation system offers the most advanced model of strategic cooperation for the<br \/>\nEPO and OAPI. It offers significant benefits to OAPI and its member states as<br \/>\nwell as to the users. The validation agreement is expected to provide EPO<br \/>\napplicants with direct access to high-quality patent protection in 17 states in<br \/>\nAfrica, a market of some 280 million inhabitants.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>27.
