Towards the end of<br \/>\n2022, some 60 individuals and teams took up the challenge: to write an AI code<br \/>\nthat improves access to patent information on green plastics, helping to rid<br \/>\nthe planet of plastic waste.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEach<br \/>\nfinalist will present their creative code at an online award ceremony on<br \/>\nThursday 23 February 2023 at 14.00 hrs CET, where the winners will be revealed.<br \/>\nThe ceremony will also highlight how the finalists&#8216; AI solutions could<br \/>\ncontribute to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\">United Nations Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (SDGs),<br \/>\nparticularly to responsible consumption and production (SDG 12).\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe<br \/>\nwinner will receive a EUR 20 000 cash prize, with the second and third place<br \/>\nfinalists each receiving EUR 15 000 and EUR 10 000 respectively. With internal<br \/>\ncompetitors from the EPO, external entrants from across Europe and several<br \/>\nmixed teams, which solution will take a coveted spot on the podium?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe solutions use various techniques, including neural networks,<br \/>\ngradient boosting machines, transformer models, fine-tuned language models, and<br \/>\na sequence-to-sequence approach. Here are the six finalists; a full list of<br \/>\nteam members and full summary of each solution is available on the official<br \/>\nevent page, where you can also register to attend the award ceremony (see<br \/>\nbelow).\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t<b>AI4EPO<\/b>, Greece and Netherlands<br \/>This team&#8217;s model uses<br \/>\n\tstate-of-the-art AI pipelines and large language models from OpenAI for<br \/>\n\tzero-shot, few-shot and other approaches to arrive at a custom MLP neural<br \/>\n\tnetwork for binary and multi-label classification.\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t<b>Green Hands<\/b>, Netherlands<br \/>As there is currently no<br \/>\n\tclassification scheme or labelled data available in this field, Green Hands<br \/>\n\tproposed a new classification scheme, and developed a strategy to automatically<br \/>\n\tassign labels to patents in order to create a labelled training dataset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t<b>Multimodal Patent Document Classification<\/b>, Germany<br \/>\n\tand Netherlands<br \/>This team created a deep learning<br \/>\n\tarchitecture to classify patent documents by fusing features from figures and<br \/>\n\ttext, thus exploiting the multimodal nature of patents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t<b>Nikolaos Gialitsis<\/b>, Greece<br \/>Nikolaos developed a machine<br \/>\n\tlearning model that incorporates both semantic and lexical features, and that was<br \/>\n\ttrained on a dataset of patents and scientific publications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t<b>Patent Variables<\/b>, France,<br \/>\n\tGermany and Switzerland<br \/>The team converted the problem<br \/>\n\tinto a sequence-to-sequence challenge, asking the user to define green plastics<br \/>\n\tand then testing any patent claim against that definition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t<b>Thomas<\/b> <b>Ei\u00dffeller<\/b>, Germany<br \/>Using a gradient boosting<br \/>\n\tmachine, Thomas focussed on high sample efficiency, unbiased validation metrics<br \/>\n\tand maximising specificity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nAn extremely high<br \/>\nlevel of submissions was received in response to the code challenge, which was:<br \/>\nTo develop creative and reliable artificial intelligence (AI) models for<br \/>\nautomating the identification of patents related to green plastics.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe competition, open to anyone<br \/>\naged 18 or over and resident in one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/about-us\/foundation\/member-states_de.html\">EPO member<br \/>\nstates<\/a>, included over 30 participating teams representing diverse<br \/>\nnationalities.
