It is the second in a<br \/>\nseries of EPO patent insight reports related to quantum technologies\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOver the last<br \/>\ndecade or so, many large technology companies have been heavily invested in<br \/>\ndeveloping quantum computing technologies. It is a highly advantageous and<br \/>\ncompetitive technology that has many advantages over classical systems, such as<br \/>\nbeing able to analyse vast amounts of data that traditional computer systems<br \/>\nsimply cannot do within reasonable timeframes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe report<br \/>\nprovides, in the light of publicly available patent information, an overview of<br \/>\nquantum computing at large and the following sub-sectors: physical realisations<br \/>\nof quantum computing, quantum error correction and mitigation, and technologies<br \/>\nrelated to quantum computing and artificial intelligence\/machine learning.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSome of the key<br \/>\nfindings of this report are:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\tThe number of inventions in the field of quantum<br \/>\n\tcomputing multiplied over the last decade.<\/li>\n<li>\n\tQuantum computing inventions show a higher<br \/>\n\tgrowth rate than in all fields of technology in general.<\/li>\n<li>\n\tThe above-average share of international patent<br \/>\n\tapplications suggests high economic expectations with regard to the<br \/>\n\ttechnologies in question and multinational commercialisation strategy.<\/li>\n<li>\n\tThere is a dynamic patent trend in the<br \/>\n\tsub-sectors &#8218;physical realisations of quantum computing&#8216;, &#8218;quantum error<br \/>\n\tcorrection\/mitigation&#8216; and &#8218;quantum computing and artificial<br \/>\n\tintelligence\/machine learning&#8216;, where the number of inventions also multiplied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nRoughly one out of ten European patent applications in the field<br \/>\nof quantum computing has several patent applicants, suggesting active<br \/>\ncooperation between them. The patent applicants come from all continents, with<br \/>\na clear focus on the same region or continent.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWhile the number of inventions for all fields of technology is<br \/>\ncontinuously increasing (right scale), the increase in the field of quantum<br \/>\ncomputing is far above average (left scale).
