\nHow does
\nthe Unitary Patent system benefit innovative businesses and particularly
\nsmaller entities? This was the focus of a conference in Ljubljana, jointly
\norganised by the European Patent Office (EPO) together with the Slovenian
\nIntellectual Property Office (SIPO) and the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and
\nIndustry to mark the 20th anniversary of Slovenia’s accession to the European
\nPatent Convention.\n<\/p>\n
\nAddressing
\nsome 150 entrepreneurs, inventors and business representatives, President
\nCampinos praised Slovenia’s „stable, steady and strong economic growth in the
\npast decades.“ He also recalled that Slovenia made history in 2002 by becoming the
\nfirst South-Eastern European state to join the European Patent Organisation.
\nGiven the manifold challenges faced by society in terms of sustainability, he
\nnoted that „a diverse, inclusive and innovation-led economy has never been more
\nimportant for Europe and Slovenia.“ With the Unitary Patent system, Mr Campinos
\nconcluded, we will have „the patent system we need to propel this country’s
\ninnovations further and wider than ever before.“\n<\/p>\n
\nMichael
\nFr\u00f6hlich, Director for European and International Legal Affairs, and EPO Chief
\nEconomist Yann M\u00e9ni\u00e8re also spoke on the benefits of the Unitary Patent system for
\nEurope’s entire intellectual property landscape. Their contributions were
\ncomplemented by a detailed analysis of the innovation ecosystem in Slovenia and
\nan update on the Unified Patent Court’s Mediation and Arbitration Centres
\nlocated in Ljubljana and Lisbon.\n<\/p>\n
\nAhead
\nof the conference, Mr Campinos met with Slovenia’s Minister of Economic
\nDevelopment and Technology, Matja\u017e Han. „I am pleased that today’s event
\nand the first visit of \u00a0President Campinos
\nto Slovenia coincide with the 20th anniversary of our country’s membership in
\nthe European Patent Organisation“, the Minister stated. „The Slovenian economy
\nis export-oriented and closely integrated into the European economy. The Unitary
\nPatent system is a major step towards strengthening the single European market
\nand increasing its competitiveness in the global market.“\n<\/p>\n
\nMr
\nCampinos also paid a visit to the SIPO, to convey in person his best wishes to
\nthe office’s staff on its 20th anniversary, and the Jo\u017eef Stefan Institute
\n(JSI), a Slovenian science research institution that hosts a Technology and
\nInnovation Transfer Centre.
\nIn
\nher exchange with the EPO President the Director of the SIPO, Karin \u017dvokelj,
\nunderlined the need for a well-functioning and balanced system of IP rights for
\nthe development of innovation and creativity, pointing to the special role of
\npatents for the commercialisation of inventions: „The new unitary patent system
\nbrings an opportunity to obtain patent protection cheaper, faster and easier in
\nseveral European countries at the same time, while the new Unified Patent Court
\nwill enable patent disputes to be resolved more quickly and create a
\nstreamlined judicial enforcement.“

\n<\/i><\/p>\n
\nThe
\ncentre is part of the Europe-wide network of patent information centres known
\nas PATLIBs. It makes a valuable contribution to the EPO’s PATLIB 2.0 project,
\nwhich aims to strengthen the network through a variety of activities. Together
\nwith JSI Director Bostjan Zalar, Mr Campinos discussed the patent-related
\nservices that the centre provides to researchers, entrepreneurs, small and
\nmedium enterprises (SMEs), private inventors and students.\n<\/p>\n
\nFinally,
\nMr Campinos spoke with high-level representatives from the University of
\nLjubljana, where the EPO’s Pan-European Seal Young Professionals Programme is
\nvery popular with graduates. A total of 21 graduates from the university have enrolled
\nin the programme to date. He also took this opportunity to introduce the new
