It summarises the progress made on many<br \/>\naspects &#8211; technical, legal, educational and procedural; it also shows user<br \/>\nsatisfaction has risen to its highest levels yet.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe report<br \/>\nfinds that provision of new digital tools in Zoom has made it even more<br \/>\neffective for parties to argue their cases. Furthermore, the availability of<br \/>\nskilled interpreters has increased thanks to remote access. Many parties also welcome<br \/>\nthe savings in time, cost and carbon emissions resulting from not having to<br \/>\ntravel; these are conservatively estimated at over 1\u00a0000 tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub><br \/>\nin 2021.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis final<br \/>\nreport on the pilot project also includes an excerpt from those findings of the<br \/>\nrecent user satisfaction survey which related to oral proceedings in opposition<br \/>\nby VICO. During the autumn this survey gathered responses from almost 400 users<br \/>\nchosen at random from across a large sample of recent proprietors and opponents<br \/>\nand their representatives. 77% of respondents found VICO to be &#8222;good&#8220; or &#8222;very<br \/>\ngood&#8220;, up from 66% satisfaction in the survey of autumn 2021.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Overall satisfaction with oral proceedings by VICO\" height=\"648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/news-events\/news\/2022\/20221115\/satisfaction.jpg?lenya.module=svg&amp;height=648&amp;width=560\" title=\"Overall satisfaction with oral proceedings by VICO\" width=\"560\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMore parties (34%)<br \/>\nalso perceive hearings to be shorter when conducted by VICO than those who<br \/>\nthink they take longer (17%).\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe deployment<br \/>\nof VICO on a large scale was a necessary response to the COVID-19 pandemic in<br \/>\nApril 2020. In the last year the EPO has cleared its backlog of opposition<br \/>\ncases and brought its stock of cases back down to pre-pandemic levels, steadily<br \/>\nimproving the timeliness of decisions. The outcomes of opposition proceedings have<br \/>\nalso returned to their typical relative distribution, showing that VICO has had<br \/>\nno particular bias or impact on outcomes as a whole.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Outcomes of opposition proceedings\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/news-events\/news\/2022\/20221115\/outcomes.jpg?lenya.module=svg&amp;height=449&amp;width=560\" title=\"Outcomes of opposition proceedings\" width=\"560\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis report will<br \/>\nprovide the basis for deciding the future practice after the pilot project,<br \/>\nwhich is due to end on 31 December 2022.
