Remote sensing can be broadly defined as gathering data on<br \/>\nan area or phenomenon via a remote device. Remote sensing via satellites in<br \/>\nspace can reveal long-term environmental trends, detect illegal activities,<br \/>\nmonitor industrial and agricultural production, and provide early warning in<br \/>\nsupport of national security.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis study spotlights the use of space-borne sensing as an<br \/>\nindispensable tool for effectively implementing green policies and objectives.<br \/>\nThese range from applications of remote sensing data to support the mitigation<br \/>\nof climate change, forecast weather, detect pollution, protect biodiversity, and<br \/>\nmonitor the environment. The analysis of global patent filing statistics<br \/>\nhighlighted the following key trends:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\tFilings in green applications of space-borne sensing increased by 1 800% in<br \/>\n\t2020 versus 2001 (cf. 400% growth in global patent filings in all technology fields).<\/li>\n<li>\n\tChinese applicants submit the highest number patent filings (mainly domestic),<br \/>\n\twhile U.S. applicants lead in international filings.<\/li>\n<li>\n\tMajority of<br \/>\n\tpatent applications related to signal processing (software rather than<br \/>\n\thardware). <\/li>\n<li>\n\tPatenting in Europe is stagnating, with most filings from France, Germany,<br \/>\n\tand the UK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/news-events\/news\/2022\/20221006\/figure1.jpg\" title=\"Figure 1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Figure 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/news-events\/news\/2022\/20221006\/figure1.jpg\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"560\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSpace-borne sensing technologies also<br \/>\nplay a crucial part in supporting the United Nations&#8216; 2030 Agenda for<br \/>\nSustainable Development. By tracking patenting activity relating to 10 selected<br \/>\nsustainable development goals (SDGs), the study offers an indicator of how<br \/>\ninnovation is helping society to meet these goals.
