\nstate to join the European Patent Organisation. This follows the country’s deposition
\nof its instrument of accession to the European Patent Convention (EPC) on 15
\nJuly 2022. As of 1 October 2022, European patent
\napplications will include the designation of the new contracting state
\nMontenegro. The European Patent Office (EPO) will also take over the functions
\nof a PCT receiving office and act as a PCT International Search and Examination
\nAuthority on behalf of Montenegro.\n<\/p>\n
\nChairperson of the Administrative Council of the European Patent Organisation, „The
\naccession of Montenegro highlights the attractiveness of the European patent
\nsystem for European economies and its potential for growth, as a strong support
\nfor innovation in uncertain times<\/i>.“\n<\/p>\n
\nEuropean Patent Organisation said, „We are
\ndelighted to welcome Montenegro as our newest member state. Building on the
\nlast 15 years of close co-operation with the Ministry of Economic Development
\nand Tourism and the national IP office, we hope that this will benefit local
\ninnovation and our users alike<\/i>. The
\naccession of Montenegro to the EPC <\/i>is also a strong endorsement
\nof the quality of the European Patent system.<\/i>“ <\/i>\n<\/p>\n
\nthe Montenegrin Ministry of Economic Development and Tourism noted: „Montenegro
\nis pleased and privileged to become a new member state of the European Patent
\nOrganisation, which will significantly contribute to the enhancement of the
\nsystem for patent protection in Montenegro. Membership of the European Patent
\nOrganisation makes Montenegro an integral part of the family of developed
\nEuropean countries that prioritises the effective protection of inventions“.<\/i>\n<\/p>\n
\naim of strengthening co-operation on patents in Europe. It has grown from 16 signatory states of the European
\nPatent Convention in 1973, to\u00a039 contracting states as of 1 October
\n2022, including all 27 EU member states plus Albania,
\nIceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, San
\nMarino, Serbia, Switzerland, T\u00fcrkiye and the United Kingdom.\n<\/p>\n
\ncentralised procedure to examining European patent applications for the
\nOrganisation’s contracting states, one extension
\nstate\u00a0(Bosnia and Herzegovina) and four\u00a0validation states (Cambodia,
\nRepublic of Moldova, Morocco and Tunisia). This enables inventors, researchers
\nand companies from around the world to obtain high-quality patent protection
\nfor their inventions in up to 44 countries, covering a market of some 700 million people. Set up in 1977, the EPO is
\nheadquartered in Munich, with offices in The Hague, Berlin, Vienna and
