\nThe EPO’s first ever public CodeFest
\ncommences on 15\u00a0September and tackles one of today’s key sustainability
\nchallenges: ridding the planet of plastic waste. Global success depends on
\naccess to the right kind of know-how and that’s what this major new competition
\nis all about: making the know-how contained in patents concerning green
\nplastics more readily available to innovators everywhere.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe ultimate aim is to inspire
\nfuture innovation that supports healthy ecosystems and drives the circular
\neconomy for plastics. In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable
\nDevelopment Goals, we are taking our commitment to sustainability and monitoring
\ngreen technologies to the next level with initiatives such as the EPO’s CodeFest
\non Green Plastics<\/b>.\n<\/p>\n
\nSome of the groundwork has already
\nbeen done in a recent EPO study on patents for tomorrow’s plastics. This shows how
\npatent data reflects the rapid rise in innovation in plastics that are easier
\nto recycle, as well as in recycling technologies. The study provides an
\nexcellent introduction to the topic and an important starting point for anyone
\nwishing to take on the current code challenge, which is:\n<\/p>\n
\nTo develop
\ncreative and reliable artificial intelligence (AI) models for automating the
\nidentification of patents related to green plastics<\/b>.\n<\/p>\n
\nWe are calling on talented minds
\n<\/b>to register for the event now, either in an individual capacity or as a
\nteam of up to five people. If you are aged 18 or over, resident in one of the EPO
\nmember states and meet the eligibility criteria set out in the rules of
\nthe competition<\/b>, simply go to the official registration site below and enter
\nby 31 October<\/b>.\n<\/p>\n
\nWith their registration, entrants
\nare expected to submit an outline of their approach for solving the code
\nchallenge, which then runs from 15 November 2022<\/b> to 15 January 2023<\/b>.
\nThe finalists will be announced ahead of the online CodeFest award ceremony on 23
\nFebruary<\/b> at 14.00 hrs CET.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\nSubmissions will be evaluated by
\nsenior specialists from across the EPO working in sustainability, IT, data
\nscience and AI, as well as patent information and analysis. The biographies of the
\njury members are available via the official CodeFest on Green Plastics site.\n<\/p>\n
\nPrize money totalling EUR 45 000 has
\nbeen made available for this competition.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe EPO’s unparalleled data
\nresources are relied upon by a range of governmental and international
\norganisations, such as IP Offices, the OECD, International Energy Agency (IEA),
\nInternational Renewable Energy Association (IRENA) and European Commission, as
\nwell as researchers and patent information specialists. The CodeFest on Green
\nPlastics is a major opportunity to help improve access to these resources and contribute
\nto the development of an automated classification scheme for sustainable
\ntechnologies<\/b>. The competition will also help prepare the way for creating a
\nplatform for exchange on AI-based approaches to organising the EPO’s wealth
