The<br \/>\nresearch projects were awarded in 2019, receiving grants totalling \u20ac300 000.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe completed research projects addressed a diverse range of<br \/>\ntopics, such as\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The impact of the use of<br \/>\n\tpatents as collateral in loan negotiations in different European countries <\/li>\n<li>The complementarity of<br \/>\n\tdifferent IP rights by linking patent to trademark data <\/li>\n<li>The assessment and<br \/>\n\tforecast of the commercial value of patents by SMEs <\/li>\n<li>The interplay between<br \/>\n\tscience and invention networks in knowledge cohesion across Europe <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThe grant holders have been interviewed<br \/>\nabout their main research results and implications for policymakers. These engaging<br \/>\ninterviews will be released as a series of podcasts called &nbsp;&#8222;Research into patents&#8220; as of September. Stay<br \/>\ntuned!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn response to the 2021<br \/>\ncall, five projects have been proposed by the ARP Scientific Committee, which will<br \/>\nbenefit from grants totalling \u20ac600 000 under the ARP framework which aims at promoting<br \/>\nprimarily collaborative research. These projects will report in between two and<br \/>\nthree years&#8216; time and aim to investigate, i.a. how scientific clusters signal<br \/>\ntheir later impact on technological developments, the use of deep learning to<br \/>\ntrace the flow of knowledge from science to technology, visual and multimodal<br \/>\npatent search, and digital training systems for intellectual property.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe<br \/>\nEPO launched the Academic Research Programme in 2017 to encourage more research<br \/>\ninto the role of patents in the European economy and to promote the sharing of<br \/>\nresearch results. The programme complements the EPO&#8217;s role in disseminating<br \/>\npatent information, for example through its worldwide patent database<br \/>\nEspacenet, and in facilitating patent analytics through tools such as PATSTAT.<br \/>\nIt is also designed to develop fruitful contacts between academic researchers<br \/>\nand the many EPO staff who have an interest in such interactions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLast<br \/>\nyear the EPO launched its call for proposals for the ARP in a revamped version.<br \/>\nWith this new scheme, the EPO will support collaborative research with<br \/>\nscientific partner institutions, which can benefit from a wider scope, bigger budget<br \/>\nand longer duration.
