\nThe EPO published
\nits Annual Review 2021 <\/i>today,<\/i> complemented by a video
\nfeaturing highlights from the past 18 months. Together, they tell a story<\/b>
\nof adaptability, resilience and a commitment to building a more sustainable
\nglobal patent system. Our organisation continued to deliver the latest benefits
\nof its digital transformation to users in 2021. Beyond solid progress with our Strategic
\nPlan 2023<\/i>, we successfully managed the constantly evolving pandemic while
\nembracing new ways of working.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Annual
\nReview 2021<\/i> is accompanied by detailed annex reports offering insights into
\nkey areas such as quality, environmental sustainability, international
\nco-operation, social aspects, IT, data protection and communication. In addition to
\nkey operational results, these reports also reflect the central importance
\nof transparency and good governance to the EPO.\n<\/p>\n

\nCommenting on
\nthis year’s review, EPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos said: „There can be no doubt
\nthat the EPO’s digital transformation has deepened collaboration — both within
\nthe organisation and with stakeholders worldwide. Coupled with progress in
\nimplementing our strategic plan, it has enriched our efforts to continuously
\nimprove the quality of our products and services.“\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Annual
\nReview 2021<\/i> presents the results of a year in which the EPO received a
\nrecord 188 600 applications, an increase of 4.5% compared to 2020.[1]<\/sup><\/a> As innovation regained momentum
\nafter the slight decrease in applications in 2020, our patent examiners carried
\nout a total of 363 452 search, examination and opposition products in 2021.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Office made significant strides in
\n2021 towards its ultimate goal of securing long-term sustainability. As well as
\nsaving resources and reducing emissions, digitalisation has helped raise
\nawareness across the organisation of data-driven insights that support and
\nstrengthen our financial independence, contribute to continuously improving our
\nenvironmental footprint and drive our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by
\n2030. It has also provided a basis for fostering a new sense of togetherness
\nand for the new ways of working. These aim to offer all staff greater
\nflexibility in organising their work and striking a better work-life balance,
\nwhile ensuring that the Office continues to deliver products and services of
\noutstanding quality. Taking the digital transformation to users meant preparing
\nthe way for the launch of new convenient online tools and building on the
\nsuccess of services that have also increased both the transparency and reach of
\nthe patent system, such as oral proceedings in opposition by videoconference.\n<\/p>\n

\nBy the end of 2021, 71% of the
\nStrategic Plan 2023 was complete. At the time of publication, that figure
\nstands at 83%. The
\nprogress has largely been possible thanks to the feedback, input and support of
\nour stakeholders. In a rapidly evolving patent landscape, dialogue with users helps
\nto ensure that our products and services continue to meet their needs.\n<\/p>\n
