Among the report&#8217;s key findings was that patent filings for<br \/>\nhydrogen production technologies have grown on average by 18% each year since<br \/>\n2005.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRenewables-based hydrogen can be<br \/>\nused as feedstock for the chemical sector and as fuel in fuel cells where the<br \/>\nonly by-product is water. It can also replace fossil sources in synthetic fuels,<br \/>\nfor example, when combined with captured carbon. Additionally, hydrogen is<br \/>\nabundant and can be obtained through the electrolysis of water, using renewable<br \/>\nelectricity, in the presence of electrocatalysts. These factors make hydrogen<br \/>\nvery attractive as a green energy source &#8211; but only provided that its<br \/>\nproduction, through electrolysers, is green too.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2016, the number of patent families for water<br \/>\n\telectrolysis technologies surpassed the number of patents related to producing<br \/>\n\thydrogen from fossil sources (e.g. solid or liquid coal and oil-based hydrogen<br \/>\n\tsources).<\/li>\n<li>In 2018, inventions for electrocatalysts based<br \/>\n\ton cheaper minerals surpassed the number of inventions based on more<br \/>\n\ttraditional but expensive electrocatalysts (which use e.g. gold, silver, platinum<br \/>\n\tor other noble metals), confirming the drive for cheaper alternatives.<br \/>\n\tThis trend is pronounced and demonstrated by a surge in Chinese national patent<br \/>\n\tfilings. <\/li>\n<li>Photo electrolysis is a strong newly emerging<br \/>\n\ttechnology that can integrate electricity and hydrogen production in a single<br \/>\n\tstep, potentially lowering production costs. The report notes an above average<br \/>\n\tnumber of international patent families in this area &#8211; some 50% of which are<br \/>\n\tfiled by universities. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"International patent families\" src=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/news-events\/news\/2022\/20220512\/international-patent-families.jpg\" title=\"International patent families\" width=\"560\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe demands for cleaner energy have<br \/>\nnever been greater. Although patent filings show a steep increase, the report<br \/>\nunderlines that major innovations in electrolyser technology are still needed<br \/>\nto further reduce its costs and make it market-ready at industrial levels. This<br \/>\nsituation could change in the future with the recent introduction of major<br \/>\nprogrammes worldwide such as the European Commission&#8217;s dedicated &#8222;Strategy on<br \/>\nhydrogen&#8220;.
