\nThe EPO and Peru’s National Institute
\nfor the Defence of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property
\n(INDECOPI) concluded a Reinforced Partnership agreement and a Memorandum of
\nUnderstanding on Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC). Both agreements were
\nsigned by EPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos and INDECOPI Executive President
\nJuli\u00e1n Fernando Palac\u00edn Guti\u00e9rrez.\n<\/p>\n
\nThis is the fifth Reinforced Partnership
\nthat the EPO has completed within Latin America, following agreements with national
\noffices in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. INDECOPI also becomes the fifth
\nnational office in Latin America to formally introduce the CPC, following agreements
\nbetween the EPO and intellectual property (IP) offices in Argentina, Brazil,
\nChile and Mexico.\n<\/p>\n
\nSince 2018, the EPO has signed eleven
\nReinforced Partnership agreements in total, including with further national IP offices in Ethiopia, Malaysia,
\nIndonesia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, as well as with the African Regional
\nIntellectual Property Organization (ARIPO).\n<\/p>\n
\nCo-operation objectives<\/b>\n<\/p>\n
\nUnder their Reinforced Partnership, the
\nEPO and INDECOPI agree to ensure efficient patent examination and high patent quality.
\nThe two Offices will co-operate on the training and tools as well as the technical
\nand legal support necessary to conduct substantive search and examination for
\nnational first filings and to issue search reports and written opinions.\n<\/p>\n
\nAccurate classification of patent
\nliterature is essential for the optimal functioning of the global IP
\ncommunity’s access to patent knowledge. Pursuant to their CPC agreement
\ntherefore, the EPO and INDECOPI will co-operate on CPC training as well as technical
\nICT-related support to assist with classification and, where relevant,
\nreclassification in the CPC. The two Offices also intend to co-operate on
\nquality regarding CPC classification work.\n<\/p>\n
\nMore broadly, the purpose of the
\nagreements is to help contribute to the continuous improvement of the global
\npatent system as well as to further foster innovation, competitiveness and
\neconomic growth and development. This could in turn play a significant role in supporting
