\nThe European Patent Office (EPO) and the
\nEuropean Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) have signed a Memorandum
\nof Understanding to provide a general framework that will guide co-operation
\nactivities between the two organisations. Signed by EPO President Ant\u00f3nio
\nCampinos and EIT Director Martin Kern, the agreement draws upon the
\ncomplementary roles of each organisation in fostering innovation that tackles
\nsocietal challenges and promoting a modern intellectual property (IP) culture
\nin Europe.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe signatories emphasised the need to
\nsupport Europe’s innovation ecosystems with a view to creating sustainable
\ngrowth, including by fostering synergies between the EPO’s Europe-wide PATLIB
\nnetwork of patent information centres and the EIT Knowledge and Innovation
\nCommunities (KICs). These KICs work with local
\norganisations across Europe as innovation hubs, forming the larger EIT
\nCommunity. The scheme is a central pillar of the work of the EIT, which the
\nEuropean Union set up in 2008 to strengthen Europe’s ability to innovate.\n<\/p>\n
\n„Our partnership with the EIT will help us share
\nknowledge even more effectively and support innovators, start-ups, SMEs and
\nbusinesses across Europe with best-in-class expertise. This will enhance the
\nimpact of the European patent system at the same time as improving access to
\npatent information and raising awareness of the power of patent knowledge,“ <\/i>said EPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos.\n<\/p>\n
\n„At the EIT, we support innovation in
\norder to address today’s major global challenges ranging from health to climate
\nchange. We are delighted to work together with the European Patent Office, in
\norder to offer its expertise to our innovators, helping them to protect and
\nutilise the Intellectual Property generated when they turn their ideas into
\nproducts and services for European citizens. Particularly SMEs and start-ups
\noften lack capacity and knowledge to do so themselves. With this cooperation
\nbetween EIT and EPO, we expect to see more of our innovations being grounded on
\nbusiness models that can sustain themselves and create a bigger impact<\/i>„, said
\nEIT Director Martin Kern.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe agreement defines the kind of
\nco-operation activities to be developed further in subsequent annual work
\nplans. Four main areas of co-operation have been identified: „Business support
\nactivities“, „Technology trends and economic studies“, „Education and training“
\nand „Awareness raising and promotion“.\n<\/p>\n
\nUnder the terms of the agreement, the two
\norganisations will also share knowledge and expertise relevant to the
\ncontinuous development of their staff. Further joint efforts will be made in
\ndisseminating and promoting the latest economic studies.\n<\/p>\n
