\nOn 16 February, almost 7 800 participants
\nattended the first ever public Tech Day at the European Patent Office. The
\nonline event explored a diverse range of sustainable innovation, and how to
\naccelerate the development of technologies of transformation required to
\nsustain planetary health – both human health and the health of our planet.\n<\/p>\n

\nEPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos
\nopened Tech Day 2022 by acknowledging that „when it comes to sustainability,
\nthere are challenges. Huge challenges. But we have a patent system that can
\nsupport the technologies of transformation that will overcome these challenges.
\nWe have a patent system that will foster the innovations needed to meet our
\nemissions targets, our recycling and other sustainability goals.“\n<\/p>\n

\nAs part of the Office’s efforts
\nto raise awareness of the role of the patent system, Mr Campinos highlighted
\nthe EPO’s plans to create a patent and innovation observatory later this year
\nthat aims to inform debate on patent insights and analysis. The launch of the
\nUnitary Patent and Unified Patent Court would also help the EPO offer more
\nsupport to innovators in Europe, he said.\n<\/p>\n

\nPhilipp Offenberg and Ben Gaddy
\nof Breakthrough Energy delivered the event’s keynote on accelerating climate
\ninnovation, with a focus on start-ups. They emphasised the urgent need for bold
\naction on supporting innovation to deliver the European Green Deal. During a
\nlively roundtable, leading inventors, analysts and scientists then discussed
\nthe transformations that current technology and policy landscapes are
\nundergoing with a view to achieving greater sustainability.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe discussion drew on major recent
\nstudies published in partnership between the EPO, whose Chief Economist Yann
\nM\u00e9ni\u00e8re was present, and the International Energy Agency, represented on the
\npanel by Energy Technology Analyst Simon Bennett.\n<\/p>\n

\nTheir analysis was complemented
\nby inspiring practice-led insights into materials science from the inventors Jane
\nn\u00ed Dhulchaointigh, Managing Director of Sugru, and Christoph G\u00fcrtler, Head of
\nGlobal Industry Academia Cooperations at Covestro Deutschland. The panel was
\ncompleted by Markus Lienkamp, Chair of Automotive Technology at the Technical
\nUniversity of Munich and moderated by the editor and writer on intellectual
\nproperty James Nurton.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe dynamic Tech Day 2022
\nprogramme concluded with a series of dialogues on sustainable innovation for planetary
\nhealth, in which innovators and EPO experts discussed areas such as e-waste,
\ngreen hydrogen, plant-based meat and next-generation vaccines.\n<\/p>\n

\nA final wrap-up session focussed
\non how the EPO is responding to the increasing urgency of meeting the UN’s
\nSustainable Development Goals. Principal Director Communication and EPO
\nSpokesperson Luis Berenguer Gim\u00e9nez began with a reminder of the EPO’s new Young
\nInventors Prize<\/b> to acknowledge and reward innovators aged 30 or under who
\nare working in the field of sustainability.\n<\/p>\n

\nMr Berenguer Gim\u00e9nez was joined
\nby Vice President Corporate Services Nellie Simon, who highlighted the EPO’s
\nholistic approach to sustainability, which would help the Office to achieve its
\naim of carbon neutrality by 2030. Vice President Patent Granting Process
\nStephen Rowan spoke about how the EPO is making its services more accessible to
\nsmall and medium-sized enterprises, as well as deepening digital dialogue with
\nall applicants and making patent knowledge available to everyone. Finally, Vice
\nPresident Legal and International Affairs Christoph Ernst emphasised how crucial
\ndigitalisation had been for the purposes of continuing to advance international
