\nEPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos yesterday met with Alexander
\nRamsay, Chair of the Unified Patent Court Preparatory Committee, the representatives
\nof the participating member states in charge of the five work streams for the
\nPreparatory Committee, as well as J\u00e9r\u00f4me Debrulle, the Chair of the Select
\nCommittee of the Administrative Council in charge of the Unitary Patent. The
\nmeeting enabled participants to update each other on progress in preparing the
\nremaining tasks to be undertaken for the launch of the Unitary Patent and
\nUnified Patent Court (UPC).\n<\/p>\n
\nPresident Campinos emphasised the
\nimportance of close co-operation between all partners in the final preparatory
\nphase: „The start of the provisional
\napplication period last month gave the signal that the UPC\/UPP package will soon
\nbecome a reality,“ he said. „I am confident that thanks to the well-proven
\nco-operation of our dedicated teams and the coordination of our joint efforts,
\nwe will be able to deliver the final tasks as planned and usher in the
\nlong-awaited Unitary Patent to the benefit of our users.“\n<\/p>\n
\nAlexander Ramsay, Chair of the UPC Preparatory Committee,
\nstated: „It is hugely encouraging to have come this far. We are now highly
\nmotivated to work, together with our partners, to conclude the preparations.“\n<\/p>\n
\nJ\u00e9r\u00f4me Debrulle, Chair of the Select Committee, said: „This
\nmajor long-awaited reform of the European patent system has never been so
\nclose. The EPO Select Committee in charge of the implementation of the Unitary
\nPatent will complete its work by 30 June 2022. The main task which remains on
\nits agenda is the finalisation of an ambitious communication programme in the
\ninterest of users and the EPO member states.“\n<\/p>\n
\nThe Unitary Patent and the Unified Patent Court are the
\nbuilding blocks of the Unitary Patent package which will supplement and
\nstrengthen the existing centralised European patent-granting system. Unitary
\npatents will make it possible to obtain uniform patent protection in the
\nparticipating EU member states which have ratified the UPC Agreement, by
\nsubmitting a single request to the EPO, making the protection of inventions for
\npatent holders simpler and more cost effective.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe UPC will be a common court of the
\nparticipating member states with jurisdiction for infringement and
\nrevocation actions concerning patents granted by the EPO. This specialised
\ncourt will make the Europe-wide enforcement of patents easier, offer greater
\nlegal certainty and reduce costs resulting from litigation in multiple
\njurisdictions.\n<\/p>\n
