Mr Campinos<br \/>\nand Dr Kim took stock of the fruitful collaboration between the two offices and<br \/>\nlaunched the first EPO-KIPO study, a comparative study on computer-implemented inventions<br \/>\n(CIIs). The publication aims to provide applicants and<br \/>\npractitioners with clear and useful insights into each office&#8217;s examination<br \/>\npractices in this rapidly growing area.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe<br \/>\nstudy first outlines and compares the respective approaches<br \/>\nto examining CIIs. It then focuses on ten example cases that have been analysed<br \/>\nin parallel by experts from the EPO and KIPO. These examples were carefully<br \/>\nselected by both offices to reflect the range of CIIs for which patent<br \/>\napplications are often filed. The cases therefore span<br \/>\nareas such as artificial intelligence, graphical user interfaces, speech processing,<br \/>\ne-commerce and telecommunications.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAs shown in the study, the EPO and KIPO use overlapping<br \/>\nyet different sets of criteria to assess the patentability of CIIs. In<br \/>\npractice, this leads to outcomes which are largely comparable, but not always<br \/>\ncompletely aligned. Therefore, when drafting CII-related patent applications,<br \/>\napplicants and practitioners may benefit from taking into consideration the two offices&#8216;<br \/>\ndifferent approaches.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe EPO will host the<br \/>\nannual meeting of the heads of the world&#8217;s five largest IP offices (IP5) in<br \/>\nJune 2022. In the run up to the meeting, the EPO and KIPO agreed to co-operate closely<br \/>\non raising awareness of the benefits of IP, with a view to building a<br \/>\nsustainable economic recovery and drawing attention to the positive<br \/>\ncontributions that fostering and protecting innovation can make to achieving<br \/>\nthe UN&#8217;s Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, EPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos met online with Dr Kim Yong Rae, Commissioner of the Korean Patent Office (KIPO).
