\nDuring an online
\nceremony on 23 November, EPO President Ant\u00f3nio Campinos was joined by Ms Ana Margarida Bandeira, President of the Council of INPI Portugal,
\nand Mr Cl\u00e1udio Vilar Furtado, President of the Council of INPI Brazil, to launch
\nan international patent training event addressing the needs of the Community of
\nPortuguese Language Countries. The three-day event covered a broad range of
\npatent-related topics and was attended by more than 130 participants from
\nAngola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9
\nand Pr\u00edncipe. It drew on synergies with the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO)
\nand Organisation Africaine de la Propri\u00e9t\u00e9 Intellectuelle (OAPI), of which some
\nof the participants‘ countries are also members.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe event is intended to mark the beginning of a
\nlong-term training programme and to help develop capacity and competences
\nwithin the national IP offices of the states where participants are based. This
\nwill support them in implementing international best practices in search and
\nexamination and help raise awareness of IP among a broader audience, including professionals
\nat universities, technology transfer offices and incubators. The training emphasises
\nthe importance of patent knowledge and the PATLIB network, as well as enabling national
\nIP offices to support local innovators more effectively, especially when they consider
\nhow best to protect and leverage the commercial value of their inventions.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe training also aims at greater levels of efficiency
\nby helping to avoid the duplication of efforts. Hence the importance of
\nmultilateral co-operation between IP offices and the joint commitment to developing
\nthe patent system in the Lusophone community. Mr Campinos
\nwarmly thanked all partners for their invaluable contributions, including the co-organizers
\nINPI Portugal and INPI Brazil, as well as those organisations that supported
\nthe event: ARIPO, OAPI and the EU-funded AfrIPI project.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe first Lusophone Conference on Industrial Property
\norganised by the Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) is
\nscheduled to take place as a hybrid event on 26 April 2022 at the Lisbon premises
\nof the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). The conference offers
\na further opportunity to share and disseminate best practices among IP offices
